is this true?

I got this message..possibly a bulk mail thingy...through the orkut account..from a person called Shobana..

[start message]

I just heard from one of the active stray dog lover/activiist that there is going to be an order passed in the next 2-3 days from the comissioner to kill all dogs in Bangalore, ALL DOGS/Sterilized/unsterilized/friendly/meak.. ALL OF THEM and mostly the private vehicles are going to be hired. If we have to really see our friends alive, we need to be united and fight for it.. ELSE.. all you guys wud do is sit and cry helplessly after some days. Please guys, cooperate. Please help our poor friends.

Thanks a lot.

Buzz me anytime with better suggestions but make it fast before they are taken away. Its already happening, in Koramangala, in Cox town.. Pls act fast.

[End Message]

What is happening in bangalore? Is this rumour or is there any truth to this?

This sun won't shine anymore

Another dog .... another sad day for human kind. Shame on us. Really.

Sunshine, a beautiful, lovable and extremely snugly golden Cocker Spaniel was left to breathe her last at CUPA by her horrible ex-owners.

With not a care in the world, they abandoned this beautiful, yet helpless dog in the twilight of her life and went about life as if nothing had happened.

Me and a few of the members of this blog tried to place sunshine but we had very few takers for a blind dog... I was losing hope and getting restless. My fellow bloggers sent me encouraging emails, telling me to keep my faith in mankind intact and that very soon, the sun would shine for this dog...

Unfortunately, we were all wrong.

Sunshine passed away, alone, scared and totally helpless at the CUPA shelter last week.

So, again... what we all did was stand and stare.

I feel like my energy and enthusiasm died with her and it's shaken me up quite a bit.

I remember holding this quivering dog in my arms, hoping to comfort her, in what I didn't know were her last few days... she was shy at first, vary...wondering who I was and if I would inflict cruelty that hadn't already been inflicted on her...but when she felt my touch and heard me whisper loving words in her ear, she relaxed and blossomed....a lot like a flower... and she shone...oh how she shone..and that's when I thought...she's like a little sunflower...that faces the sun and shines... and that was the moment I knew that she should be called Sunshine. Later that evening, Jellicles and I were chatting online and we both agreed that Sunshine was truly befitting a name for her.

Sunshine sat in my lap for over two hours, often nuzzling the crook of my arm when I stopped petting her...gently reminding me that the caresses should continue.... I wept like a baby at her plight and she licked my tears to comfort me .... almost as though she understood that I felt her pain.... I left the shelter... completely heartbroken with the promise that I would do everything in my power to give Sunshine a decent home to pass the last few years of her life with dignity and love.

I failed. And if I could, I wish I could apologize to her...because I did promise... to come back...and take her to a home where she would be loved.

I feel I've failed. Not only have I failed her... but I feel that we as a race have failed.

If you beg to differ... tell me... how do you justify leaving a loving companion in the twilight of her life.... to die a lonely death in unfamiliar surroundings?

Good News and Bad News

Sushruta, can you please fill in the details if I missed something?

First, the Good News..Angel got adopted!!! Bow-wows and belly rubs all around!

Angel's story is a miracle and a testement to the fact that Angels do exist among us...both the canine kind and the human kind.

Angel taught me a valuable lesson..that there are good people out there and it doesnt hurt to trust that they will eventually turn up. I was ready to accept the fact that Angel would live on the streets after shelters refused to keep her....Angel is a three legged lab, you see and there are few people who would like to adopt an adult dog with special needs. Even though she certainly doesnt care that she only has three legs!!

Angel was a house pet and a life on the street for her was unimaginable. I was preparing worst case scenarios for her life on the street and the best I hoped for was to find street guardians for Angel. For her to have foster parents/street guardians was better than being dumped off on a road where other territorial dogs roam..

But I was wrong. Angel didnt have to go to the streets. She found a home. My lack of faith would have placed her in jeopardy and probably not an inconsiderable amount of grief.

The bad news is that this Brown Puppy died from an infection. Even though she was rushed to the hospital, it was too late.

Puppies, regardless of breed, can be trained as house pets. The street pups, the pariahs, are no different from any pure bred puppy. Because they havent spent a lot of time on the streets as adults, they quickly adapt to a home with less space than a road, but the trade off is worth it if it means that they get a loving home and someone to share their endless supply of tail wagging, tongue lolling love.

We have a lot of puppies up for adoption as well as adult dogs that have been abandoned by their owners....some of them have special needs, some are older..but all of them are 100% adorable. They all need homes.

Please spread the word.

Besides these, Sunshine, Angel, Princess, Bala and these adorable pups still need you. Do spare a look and tell us dont they desrve to be loved and homed?

Bala!!

This is Bala. Bala is from Delhi, but she'd love a home anywhere! Even Bangalore! Bala lives in a home now, but unfortunately, Bala's owner cannot give her the attention..and especially the play...this young pup needs.

If you have the time and energy to play with, train and want to get exhausted running with this dear one, do let us know..:)

Name: Bala
Age: Almost 2yrs
Breed: Mongrel = part imp + part scamp!
Sex: Female
Nature: In a nut-shell - Naughty!

Bala's current owner says:

Bala LOVES to play, she loves to fetch her squeaky ball, play tug-o-war and run around the house chasing the cat. She loves to stick her head out the balcony and give her opinion on everything from cyclewalas to bits of paper flying in the wind. She is the eternal optimist, always asking for more tidbits, more hugs, more play, more walks, more love. She is very very protective of me and is an excellent guard dog, very alert and lets all and sundry know that if you want to get inside her home you need her explicit permission! Once in, she'll jump and lick you to death! She is potty-trained and has had her basic obedience training as well. I have spoiled her some... OK a LOT and she proudly shows that off.

Caged

Just amazing. Eyes almost resemble the famous photo of the Afghan woman in war...

ps: Adorable cats and kittens available for adoption too. Please leave a comment if you would like to adopt a feline companion.

Yes, they are all related..

The third one of the terrible trio. Very sweet... doleful eyes...longing for love

Two out of three.... huddled together, scared, waiting to be loved.

These are siblings of the 3 symmetrical ones. VERY adorable lot. Shy yet very playful once they get comfortable.

One of a huge litter. He stood out just because he was so quiet and just looked at us with such sad eyes... lovely animal.

Thanks to Natasha for the pictures!

These come with an instruction Manual.

Posting for Natasha

Just stunning. Amazingly symmetrical in size and markings and very very loving. They are three of a litter of 5.

These 3 are from one litter. They are about 20 days old. The white one is a lil' fatty while the shy one is the brown one.

A little older one but just adorable. Barks a lot when he sees that someone may take him.... but immediately quietens down when petted....

Little Brown Princess

Look at this little lost soul. Won't you help this little girl find a safe place to live? A little love, some food, and lots of love and you will have a gaurding sngel as your shadow for life. Please people speak to people you know who would be interested in adopting her or providing her a safe place to survive. Dont forget their are more waiting for you to help them out...

Time to Stare

I am posting this on behalf of Natasha..

What is this life if full of care
We have no time to stand and stare?
No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep, or cows.
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.
No time to turn at Beauty's glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.
A poor life this, if full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

- William Henry Davies 1871 - 1940

And yet we do - stare. I know I did. In horror when I saw this beautiful spaniel who is currently housed at CUPA. She was brought in by her owners who didn't want her because she had become blind. After a few years of having her around, she was redundant now. They could no longer show her off so they decided to dump her - just like a lot of young people dump the elderly into old people's homes.

If I ever met the owners, I'd want to shake them to "see" her again, with renewed vision becuase really - I think they are the blind ones. And they call themselves humans - bah!

Natasha says:

[..] beautiful golden cocker spaniel who had been brought in on Sunday. Apparently, the owners decided not to keep her as she has become blind:-( The poor dog had matted hair and was shivering violently.... I spent about two hours with her, cut off all the extra hair, trimmed her and tried to de-tick&de-flea her as much as I could.... I was a little sad as no one seemed to know her name and how old she was.... Lingaraj expressed concern saying that he didn't know what he was going to do with her....

This dog is perfect for those who want to adopt a dog, but dont have time to take the dog out for walks/exercise. She is old and deserves a warm place to spend the rest of her days. She has been in a home and obviously cannot be left elsewhere.

Natasha calls this one, 'furball'. I love her black nose mask and those two little white dots over the eyes, its not photoshopped.

Lab-Pariah mix. Someone has been naughty! Seriously..look at that face!

These two are siblings. It will be great if there someone kind enough to take these two pups together.

Mumbai Madness.

link courtesy: Sushruta.

This loser is taking tips from the Bangalore losers. Obviously.

Kill all stray dogs, says Mumbai municipal chief.

Mumbai: All stray dogs should be killed as a long-term solution, Brihan Mumbai Corporation chief Jayraj Pathak has said. The BMC in fact plans to put forth a proposal to the High Court and then the Supreme Court on the issue.

According to unofficial figures Mumbai has around 2 lakh stray dogs. Drawing a comparison to Singapore, Jayraj Pathak said in order to get rid of the stray dog problem once and for all, stray dogs should be killed as done in Singapore. He further added that killing of stray dogs is not a new exercise since dogs were killed in Mumbai from 1983 to 1994.

"We should kill stray dogs as a long term solution. We will be putting forth a proposal to the high court and then to the Supreme Court,” said Pathak.

However, the move is likely to create a stir among the animal rights activists who slam killing of the stray animals as ‘inhuman’.

The effectiveness of such mass culling has also been questioned time and again, since mostly such exercises have failed in controlling the dog stray population.

“Killing dogs is not the solution to control their population. A sterilization programme is the only way to tackle the stray dog numbers. Killing them is an inhuman practice and in fact turns a failure when it comes to controlling their population on a long-term basis,” Editor of The Pioneer Chandan Mitra said.

The Municipal authorities in Bangalore had two months back carried on a similar culling programme, which invited much criticism from the animal rights activists. Footage of dogs beaten to death, buried alive, electrocuted and worst, left with slit throat was aired by various TV channels, which gave way to a campaign against culling by animal lovers.

Further, this one from mumbai.metblogs says that there is going to be a 'dog retirement community'.

A BMC team has shortlisted two plots outside the city, measuring a total of 49 acres, where they propose to resettle the city's five-lakh stray dog population. The move came after the Bombay High Court asked the BMC to look for space to relocate stray dogs from the city and sterilise them to curb their population as NGOs have opposed killings. The corporation then told the court that the sterilisation programme had not been effective and has now opted to relocate them.

But there is, in fact, something that should worry the NGOs, if not the BMC. The 49-acre plot means that each dog will get just get about four sq ft of space, and that's provided we leave out infrastructure, accommodation for staff and support facilities.

I am a little confused about this constant bleating that sterilisation doesnt work. Sterilisation stops animals from reproducing. It doesnt render them invisible which is what most urban citizens seem to want. The problem with 'stray dogs' is that they exist. As long as noone is willing to take them into their homes, they will continue to exist. Some dogs have been on the streets for such a long while that they cannot be housed. street dog communities have their own hierarchy..let us not forget that dogs, not too long ago, used to be pack animals..they live in groups and they ahve a pack leader/alpha dog...you cannot destroy the street dog community and make them perfect house pets overnight. of course, the puppies from the streets can be housed, but we will have to accept that there will always be dogs on the streets..at least for some time. maybe in the long term, as strays are sterilised and pups are placed in home..and most importantly, home pets are NOT abandoned by irresponsible owners, the 'stray dog problem' will disappear.

Angel, redux. part 2.

the Angel redux post has been edited out because i wrote it under mistaken assumptions. it is not valid anymore. I have edited it to be invisible to avoid further confusion.

revised update: Angel is in a temp safe place. He wont end up on the streets. Because of his special needs and because he has always been a house pet before his recent injury(and subsequent amputation), he cannot end up on the street with or without guardians to look over him.

He still needs a home.

I am reposting Angel's details here again..

Name: Angel
Age: Approx 3+ yrs
Breed: Labrador
Sex: Male
Nature: Friendly and full of energy and enthusiasm
Details: He was abandoned by the owners with a badly injured foreleg. The foreleg had to be amputated.
Watching him run around, one would believe that he is unaware of the missing foot.
Status: Currently at the Vet Hospital, Hebbal. Please help us find a home for Angel. Leave a comment or drop a mail at adoptstrays@gmail.com

Rest In Peace Simon

Remember Simon? It seems that as we humans had no time or place for him, so He decided to take him under his wings. Simon died, that too a painful death...crushed by a truck. Please people if this is how we will keep losing our dogs then I don't see any point in posting and asking for help.
Angel, is about to be put on street as no one wants to adopt him. Life of a dog which once must have been a pet can only end like Simon's. If we can't find him a home now...
I am even scared of inquiring about these two boys, just hoping and praying that they are alive and happy. Not to forget Meera, this little fellow and so many tiny pups still need you.
If you are not in Bangalore and reside in Delhi, please help Socks. Mumbai people please find homs for these pups. please people, even if you take care of one dog, help one to find a home or a safe and loving shelter, please do it now.
Let Simon be the unfortunate last.
