Pippa needs a home.

This came through Yasmine...

this is Pippa, 1&/12 years old and now needs a new home. she goes too near the horses and risks being kicked. so i have been told. she is very gentle otherwise.

Dealing with your dog’s fear of firecrackers

Let’s face it, for most of us Diwali is an occasion to be looked forward to with dread more than any other emotion. The sight of one’s pet trembling, hiding, refusing food, trying to run away and generally getting stressed out of his mind does not inspire joy, to put it mildly.

I asked canine behaviour consultant Shirin Merchant how to make the whole experience less traumatic for our dogs (and ourselves!) She sent me an excellent chart which I’ve posted here.

• It is not uncommon for dogs to be hesitant, or even frightened by loud noises.

• Often a dog will react to a noise as a direct reflection of his human companion. If you show fear, act nervous or scared of a loud noise, your dog will pick up on your subtle signals and learn that loud noises are to be feared. It can take only one incident for a dog to get scared of loud noises. A dog’s ears are sensitive, and loud noises can hurt them.

• Do not praise your dog when he shows fear of loud noises. If you do, you are not only praising him for being frightened, but you are making it more likely that he will be frightened the next time a loud noise happens. Many well-meaning dog owners increase their dog's anxiety by stroking, cuddling, and saying "It's OK" when their dogs act nervous. Instead spend some quality time with your dog being fun and playful. Try and distract him away from the noise.

• If your dog is already afraid of loud noises, then a process of desensitization will help. Desensitizing your dog involves exposing your dog to low-volume noises. Gradually increasing the noise level while giving him something pleasurable such as praise and a food treat. Over a period of time your dog will get used to the noise. This process is best carried out under the supervision of a canine behaviour counselor.

• Dogs instinctively seek out confining spaces when frightened. If your dog hides under the bed or behind a cupboard don’t drag him out in an attempt to comfort him. Instead put some clothing or towels with your familiar scent next to the dog for reassurance. It would also help if you play soothing, easy listening music relatively loud to help drown out the fear-producing noise.

• In severe cases of the dog being frightened, drugs and homeopathy can help your canine companion. You MUST consult your vet before attempting to give any drugs to your dog.

• Firecrackers can harm pets. Be extremely cautious when lighting firecrackers around animals. The gunpowder in firecrackers is potentially toxic to pets if they eat it. Also, there is always a danger of a dog getting hurt or burned if fireworks are accidentally shot at them.

Note on homeopathy: We've found the remedy Borax 1M useful in reducing fear of loud noises. I described how to use it in my earlier post on homeopathy.

Dogs at Anand Chhaaya need help..

Okay people..check out AnandChhaaya blog..check catsofbangalore blog for their message.

I just sponsored a day's meal and it only costs about Rs. 1500/. That would take care of about 170 dogs.

We also need to help them socialise and place these dogs in good homes even if it is going to be one dog at a time.

Flickr images of Anand Chaaya

Ideas to help Anand Chaaya, please?

some suggestions that i have made already:

1. sponsoring a day's meal at anand chhaaya.
2. donating food items..rice, veggies, meat, milk, eggs etc for a day's meal. please make sure they dont get spoilt.
3. approaching schools/colleges to ask if a class can sponsor a day at anand chhaaya. the children can also interact with the friendlier dogs there..it is also a good chance to see how strays are treated and how they are being saved in bangalore.

anything else?

Shirin Merchant's Canine Courses.

Shirin Merchant is a Mumbai based canine behaviour specialist. She is India’s only practicing canine behaviour consultant, an associate of John Rogerson (one of the world’s foremost canine behaviour experts), and editor of Woof magazine. I came to know her through Rajashree Kahlap's excellent blog,http://indianpariahdog.blogspot.com. Shirin has also conducted several courses for the volunteers at www.wsdindia.org.

In our blog, we had showcased a post from Rajashree's blog...the excellent FAQ by Shirin and Rajashree on how to adopt a street dog and make it a housepet. Here: Tips on bringing home a pariah dog. Impressed by her advice, I sent her a question through email and she replied promptly! You can find that exchange here...Understanding aggression ofstray dogs.

If Shirin can come to Bangalore to conduct classes, there is much to learn. It will not only help those who are pet owners, but also those who volunteer with stray dogs and at shelters.

I call all these pups and adults brave hearts as they have survived trauma, fatal accidents or abandonment with elan. If you know of a mighty heart, which would accomodate these brave hearts please don't hesitate in droping a mail at adoptstrays@gmail.com or just leave a comment with your contact details.
Each picture has a story and would love to share it with you before you decide to adopt these bundle of joys and hope.

You can even sponsor their stay in a shelter if you think you cant take them in.

Nemo Update!!!

Remember Nemo, the pug?

well, i forwarded the latest comment to mr.murthy and got this update!!

[begin message from Mr.V.Murthy.

Nemo is doing very well. You can post this response on the blog if you like.

Nemo is transformed. Today he is in charge. He eats very well, demands his walks (that is, I have to hold him and take him around while he admires the trees, cars and life outside). He has temporarily made a very light plastic tray his home and has learned the fine art of shuffling and moving in it from room to room, yapping away. My toes are for his enjoyment and he BITES and checks to see if it hurts. If it did not, he bites harder and looks up inquiringly.

He is astonishingly intelligent and maneuvers his tray into all kinds of places and out. At night he parks himself under a sofa which has a niche underneath. He turns backwards and forward using his backside as a pivot and is able to move. Thats of course not a final solution and I am now looking for some wheels for this little man after which he will become a demon.

The other dogs are kind to him and he gets along well. But he never forgets to remind us through the day that he's boss and what he says happens. Unfortunately he's right! :-)

Nemo entertains visitors between certain fixed hours - by appointment only. He may sign autographs, he may not. He's moody.

Regards

VM

These Koramangala pups need homes....and a special request.

URGENT!!!!

We just recd some sad news from Aravinda:

One of the puppies died this morning (hes the white and brown one in the first picture). He was hit by a vehicle and found dead on the road. Being the most active he must have been braver than the other two and come out.

The mother refuses to feed them. I am afraid that if she has stopped lactating, she is probably pregnant again. could it be?

They are afraid of people and they are becoming skinnier. Can someone please help us find homes for the pups? They are not yet initiated into the street life and can be trained to be excellent house pets.

secondly..

Vinay who had adopted Tinkoo(he is doing great!!!..ok..so he chewed a sofa while teething..but he is doing great!!) sent us this..

One of my relatives has a male dog, 9 yrs old. He(the relative..not the dog) had an massive heart attack on last week. He is now admitted to the hospital. So, he wants to know if he can find a place for his dog for 2-3 months. He is ready to pay for it.
[...]
He is aged and he stays with his wife. Now, that he had a heart attack, he is advised complete bedrest and they are really having difficulties making trips to hospital and also making sure dog is fine. they'll be temporarily shifting their residence too, to stay close to hospital. And unfortunately, they can't keep the dog there. So, I said I'll find out if I can find some place for dog for 2-3 months. After this period they'll take him back.

can we find someone to take care of the dog for a few months only? of course, cupa is an option, but they might not have boarding space. any suggestions or offers for boarding welcome!

we got pups in Koramangala!!

we dont have pictures yet, but here is the letter from Aravinda. if you want to contact her, leave us a comment or send us an email to adoptstrays at gmail dot com.
(begin letter)

Hi
This morning i went out to see five puppies sleeping outside my house. the ditch is filled with sand because of the construction next door and must be quite comfortable. But i need to find homes for them as we have other dogs already to take care of. one of them is already trying to mark his spot on me!

two of these puppies are older and one especially seems really skinny while the other is a pretty little thing who decided already that she's my friend, pulling my skirt and sleeping on it and oh, she's adorable! the skinny fella (i havent checked what sex) is very good with the puppies and plays so sweetly with them. the three younger puppies seem like a nice age to be adopted because their mother also came around to check on them and seems like they are being weaned off. she was okay to have me around the puppies.

pictures will follow soon. but would be glad if you could post in on your blog. we live in koramangala, and if anyone wants to get in touch and come by, is not a problem at all.

Thanks a ton!

Regards
Aravinda

Can dogs get along with cats?

We have a question from Anjali...:)

I have a 2-year-old Golden Retriever (her name is Ammu) who is an only pet (quite like an only child). I was thinking of getting a cat too, but dont wanna do it unless they can get along well together. Ammu has never been exposed to cats. Back home in Kerala my dad's cat and dogs used to get along well together; buit then Boris (the cat) was the oldest and bossed over the dogs from the time they were puppies. Anyone having cats and dogs together at home?
