we just heard about this..[..]This is 3 Spots, which we named her because of three perfect spots that used to be on her ear. Three months ago she was caught by the pound for sterilisation and left two streets away. As you can see, half of both her ears have been docked. Yesterday when i saw her i realised there was something wrong with her eyes. The vet came to check and confirmed that she is blind in both eyes and there is no way her sight can be restored. He is of the opinion that it could be a result of docking so much of the ear that the optic nerve was affected. I was told by the lady who feeds her that people throw stones at her. 3 Spots is around 8 years old according to the vet. She is extremely friendly, very gentle, will wag her tail furiously when she sees friends, is amiable with other dogs and doesn't seem to be letting her blindness affect her. Her sense of smell seems to be compensating for the loss but the streets clearly are not safe for her anymore. We are looking for someone to adopt her who can give her a safe environment to live in.[...]PLEASE HELP! PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD.

Jaamu is in Delhi. His caretakers are leaving for Australia. It`s in Australia`s policy that no animal is allowed to enter the country from India (please see: http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/cat-dogs/countries/cat6?name=India ).

They got Jaamu 2 years ago. He was 1 month old. They picked him up on a highway, else he would be crushed by trucks.

A dog near our building had given birth to a litter of four puppies three months ago. We have managed to find homes for two but there are two more female pups in need of homes. They are called 'Kilbil' and 'Bitkil' (meaning Wiggly and Impish in Bengali, respectively) but will answer to anything. :) We have got them vaccinated for all major diseases and dewormed as well. These 2 kittens were just rescued by someone and given to my friend Dev. The mother's dead. They look extremely weak and appear to be a month old or so. Dev cannot keep them as he has rescued pigeons at home and another kitten that we rescued recently. He lives in a very small house and is already finding it very difficult to manage both the kitten and the birds. He is keeping the birds in a room and the kitten in another.

Lucky and Leo were born to one of my office cats a few months back. The cat is an extremely friendly one, she is almost human! She allows anyone to touch her and is even friendly with the 10-12 dogs in the lane.

When the kittens were born, a family on third floor in the building, kept cardboard boxes on the mid landing and kept the kittens there. The mother was used to going up and nursing the kittens, and when hungry, she would come and meow right outside my office, and I would feed her. When I was not in office, the office boy was instructed to give food to her.

One day, I was told by the watchman that something had happend to the kittens and the family on third floor had to take the kittens to a vet. I did not know this family, but still I went to know what happend. When I came to know what happend with the kittens, I was angry, aghast and upset.

The kids from neighbouring building had come, and to have some fun, they had picked up the 20 day old kittens with the mother and thrown them in the lift shaft from third floor!!!!!!!!! The kids ran away, but one of the kittens was seriously injured and bleeding a lot. When I went to check on the kitten, it was not bleeding, but the condition was such that I thought it will not survive at all. The family, kept the kittens and mother at their house and cared for them day and night, spending a lot of money on the vet visits and medication and food for the kittens and the cat. They have a lab at home, but thankfully they all stayed without fighting.

We tried getting in touch with SPCA to file a complaint against the kids, but since we dont have an eye witness, things are going slow.

Anyways, the main concern here is that the family is already out of town, and their maid is keeping the kittens till 28th of this month. Then the kittens will need an alternative. Mother cat is used to staying in the building, so will manage, but these kittens cant be left on road as there are a lot of dogs, and they are too young to fend for themselves.

Lucky and Leo, as I call them, are very adorable, around 2 months old. Sad part is that Lucky has lost his eyesight due to the fall. He manages to move around the house, and come to the food with the smell, but he cant see anything. In the picture also, you will see that the kitten on left side has face which is flat, as if someone punched it in face, and that is the result of the fall.

I myself have a blind cat (for people who dont know, Bittu, my ginger cat, is blind due to taurine deficiency) at home, and he is no trouble at all! So please spread the word and please help in getting both these boys adopted.

He loves to play, loves kids and people and is not aggressive at all. He is toilet trained and obedient. Has a lot of energy and loves being cuddled and fussed with.
He's an indoor dog (we live in an apartment) but would be very happy with a garden to run in.

5 kitties in hyderabad!

we have five cats that need homes very urgently. we only have less than a week to place them. we would appreciate it if someone can foster them until we find a home because they cannot live on the streets or in a shelter. all of them were rescued and nursed back to health by their guardian. their guardian has to return abroad...they were all severely ill and handicapped when they were rescued..you wouldnt believe how healthy they are now..they deserve a good home..they have made it so far.

Sweetpea - survived food poisoning as a kitten. THe various injections given to her left a bit shaky with her spinal cord.. she moves like a snake :) very picky with her frnds. She understands her name and will come running where ever she is.Very smart cat.

Lubbu is the plain black one who can meow like a cow... :) she has a very loud voice and does not like to get close to anyone. just feed her twice and she keeps herself clean ad healthy.

Two loving Indian pups for adoption in Bangalore. These pups were found off the street without their mother. Upon inquiring the neighboring security guard, mentioned that the mother was taken away by dog catchers and wasn't traceable. This was a litter of four pups of which one was taken by a random stranger saying he would take care of it. Another was run over by a car this morning and passed away. The fate of these two remains uncertain.

Orphaned and left to die

On the 13th of October, 6 little pups less than 1 month old were dropped off by someone in a car into a storm water gutter near the Domlur Park opposite the BDA complex. Their cries of despair were heard by some kind hearted taxi drivers whose cars are usually parked adjacent to the park. They picked the pups up and placed them below a park bench to shelter them from the rain and even treated the little puppies to some milk the next day morning. As it started to pour by afternoon, the puppies whined piteously as they were drenched and disoriented. A resident of MIG flats heard their cry and rescued them from the park, provided them shelter in his garden. The little pups were shaky and terrified that night. However, one of the healthier pups was immediately adopted by a gardener. As calls were made to arrange for a pick up by CUPA(Compassion Unlimited plus action Animal Shelter) ambulance which was busy on the day, 3 more pups a few weeks older than the previous ones were found in the same gutter the next day, stranded with water on both sides and a last puppy was rescued on Sunday. Since the CUPA ambulance was always busy with other animals that needed immediate attention, the 9 puppies managed to sustain themselves in the garden being fed Milk and bread for the next one week.

Subsequently, the puppies thrived well and as their curiosity increased, they began wandering outside the garden where there are open sewage chambers and cars steadily coming in and out, making it very risky to keep them unsupervised in the garden. Since it is difficult to manage 9 puppies, they were taken to the CUPA animal shelter in Hebbal where they are kept under observation, but run risks of infection due to the numerous other animals at the CUPA shelter.

If you have a place in your heart and in your house for these tiny little pups that have a little chance of survival, unless they are cared for by a loving owner, please contact CUPA whose details are provided below. There is nothing more beautiful than looking into the eyes of these innocents will melt your heart. In return you will have a friend who will love and cherish you unconditionally.

Hi everyone,
As you all know I had three puppies, Achu and two others. 2 got adopted a while back, but one called Bruna, is still with me. She has had really bad luck getting adopted.It's been about 3 months now and I got some really sad news from my landlord. My landlord has given me my second warning and a deadline to get rid of her by this Sunday, he was even as cruel to say, "I don't care what you do with her, just get her out even you have to take her to Banerghatta and throw her on the streets there." If you please know anyone, that could keep her temporarily since I no longer can, please do let me know, cause the only thing I can do after Sunday is put her in a shelter, and I really don't want to do that after pampering her so much, she and I would both me devastated. I feel really bad about the situation. But he's really mad at me, cause I have had these puppies around for 3 months now. Stray dogs cannot be killed or dislocated. Here are the relevant bits and bobs..

1. As per Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001, under the PCA Act, 1960 vide the Gazette of India:

Rule 6 clearly envisages that even if the Municipal Corporation thinks it expedient to control street dog populations, IT CANNOT RESORT TO KILLING OR DISLOCATING. It can only sterilize and immunize the dogs, and then leave them at the locations that they had been picked up from.

Rule 7 deals with the procedure to be followed upon receipt of a complaint. Please also note, the Municipal Corporation cannot just pick up dogs, simply because some people don’t like their being around. Even the dogs that are complained about can only be sterilized and immunized, and then left back at the locations that they had been picked up from.

2. From Animal Welfare Board of India, Circular D.O. AWBI / PCA/ Dated 3.3.08 : “All the problems of stray animals have to be handled within the institutional framework available and no association, recognized or unrecognized, shall take recourse to action on their own, either themselves or through any person employed by them like security guards etc.

Do not remove the community dogs from the any place as it is illegal and violation of above said rules. This amounts to cruelty to animals as per PCA Act and is a punishable offence. However, it is suggested that you may take help of recognized NGOs (List of AWO’s in your state is available in the website www.awbi.org) conducting ABC Programme for taking up Sterilization and immunization of stray dogs in the place to manage their population and to implement the provisions of Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001 in letter and spirit.”

Hello!

We found this immensely loveable brown and white pup outside our house. She was alone, and was shivering in the rain. We brought her home, and gave her some warm milk and biscuits, which she lapped up eagerly.

We have been trying to locate her family to no avail. We regularly bring her home in the nights, give her food, which she eagerly polishes off every night, and then leave her below in the garage. We cannot afford to keep her (we already have two dogs with us), but it just breaks our heart to see her alone outside. We request any kindhearted individual/ family to adopt her into their family. She desperately needs a warm home who can give her the kind of kindness which she will, am sure, pay back tenfolds. She is very very shy, but once she breaks out of her shell, she is a spritely little thing who loves to sniff around and discover new places, and when faced with someone whom she trusts, she loves to gambol around.

Some three months back, somebody left a 25 day old female pup in front of our apartment complex. She was in a distressed condition, so being dog lovers, my wife Papia and I simply couldn't neglect her and came forward to save her life.

We have nourished her to the best of our capacity and tried to accommodate her in the 10,000 square ft garage space of the complex. She was growing up well there for one month. But a lot of politics started in our society because of this and the situation soon worsened. In my absence some people threw her into a drain and started torturing her with a big stick and in other cruel ways. One Sunday she was forced to stay out for a full day and I couldn't find her. I thought she had been left far away somewhere, or even killed.

Late at night when Papia and I came back home, we found the pup in a very stressed condition, shivering in front of my flat door. We took her in and started keeping her with us.

Since we are in a flat and my service requires visits in our units outside of West Bengal, I cannot travel outside Kolkata with my wife. We can't keep the dog alone inside our locked flat or in the open ground floor garage space. Because in both cases, the dog will die. Only to survive myself, I have to do service and cannot bypass my responsibilities. We don't ever want to see her distressed in future.

We are ready to hand over this dog to anyone who is prepared to keep her with love and care for her whole life.

Her name is Pinglu and she has been dewormed and has been given all her vaccines by a registered veterinarian.

Conjunctivitis in cats (and dogs)

conjunctivitis:
conjunctivital sacs..they are the pinkish membranes that line the eyelid and connect the sclera to the eyelid. they are actually two parts..upper and lower sacs..each correspond to the upper and lower lid.

their function is to catch debris and so inflammation is very common. it could be because of trauma or illness(i.e. symptom of some form of disease). illnesse can be chronic or acute. the difference between acute and chronic is the difference between the flu and tuberculosis.

here, we will discuss only acute conjunctivitis because any kind of chronic illness can only be cured by a constitutional remedy in homeopathy. and acute conjunctivitis is pretty common in young cats as part of upper respiratory infections.

to understand this, let's discuss upper respiratory infections first. there are three types:

feline rhinotrachetis : a herpesvirus. whenever an animal suffers from stress, the herpesvirus tend to resurface. a past infection is sufficient for the stress trigger to set it off again. whenever immunity sags...infected cats will have occasional outbreaks even if they are otherwise healthy. and stress is a big factor to rupture cats' immunity shields. this herpesvirus can cause mouth ulcers or eye infections or nose infections etc. as cats age, infection tends to centre in the eyes as recurrent conjunctivitis.

feline calcivirus: somewhat similar to above, but infection is rarer than with rhinotrachetis. recurrence is less common.

chlamydia cati: chlamydial infections are rarer still. usually infection affects eyes only and they cause nasty conjunctivitis. while eye ulcers are rare with chlamydia, they are more common with rhino virus.

(note about dogs: they are less susceptible to conjunctivitis than cats. their problem is usually from direct injury, trauma, allergies(seasonal) and chronic conditions(inherited sometimes). their most common problem is something called 'dry eye'. small breeds tend to suffer more from this. they dont produce tears to lubricate and moisturise the eyes. when this happens, eyes dry out and cornea becomes irritated. surgery is usually suggested. dry eye is a chronic condition.)

it is also important to remember that when you are dealing with kittens with conjunctivitis, it is probably an acute condition and is CONTAGIOUS. if you have a clutch of kitties, it will spread to all of them unless you isolate the affected kitten.

eye ulcers are scary and they rapidly worsen. sometimes this leads to loss of the eye itself because of eyeball rupture. minor scratches can also lead to ulcers. a vet can help you figure out the nature of the problem with a special stain their use on the cornea. sometimes they suture the third eyelid dogs and cats have until the traumatised part of the eye heals..this is to hasten healing...like a bandaid.

always question your vet if he insists on using steroids or antibiotics. steroids mess up the immune system and are best avoided unless its extreme. antibiotics are useless unless the infection is bacterial and usually conjunctivitis is a viral infection. also useless with allergies or trauma cases. always question. knowledge is power.

eyewashes are helpful too. eyebright, calendula, st.john's wort are herbs that help in healing. for a basic eyewash, add 1/4 tsp salt in one cup of boiled distilled/filtered water. cool it. add herbal tinctures or teas at the rate of ten drops per cup. 1 cup = 16 tablespoons.

vitamins help boost immunity. vit c(5-10 mg/lb of body weight..thrice a day) and vit e(5-10 mg per pound of body weight ..once a day) in proper doses help reduce inflammation and hasten healing. vitamin A is great for corneal healing. use cod liver oil and place one drop over eye daily and give 1/8th tsp per ten pounds of pets' weight daily by mouth.

now..moving on to homeopathic remedies.

HOMEOPATHY FOR CONJUNCTIVITIS

aconitum napellus: symptoms include intense fear or a sudden chill. eye troubles start from exposure to bright sunlight. if there is inflammation after removal of foreign object from eye, use aconitum. it is also useful for ingrown eyelashes. eyes might be intensely red, possibly swollen and bloodshot. profuse watery discharge. animals are sensitive to light.

allium cepa: when the eyes water profusely, think of allium cepa. often in eye problems caused by allergies. tears are bland and there could be an irritating discharge from nose also. generally the left more than the right. animal is worse in warmth and better in open air. cold often progresses to laryngitis.

apis: swelling means apis. eyelids and conjunctiva may be intensely inflammed and swollen. there could be protrusion of the conjunctiva. sometimes the eye wont be able to close. sometimes eyelids are shut together with thick sticky discharge. ulceration may occur. cornea may be opaque or have opaque spots. the animals are usually warm and may seek cool areas. they are not particularly thirsty.

argentum nitricum: good remedy with new born kittens. discharge is copious and can be yellow to greenish in colour. this remedy is used when there is inflammation, swollenness and protrusion. blood shot eyes or ulceration is common in cases where argentum nitricum is needed as a remedy. margin of eyelids may be inflamed and crusty. left side may be worse than right.

additionally, animals may be gassy, diarrhea..belching etc. warmblooded and exhibit fearfulness.

arsenicum album: irritating tears. chilly, restless, thirsty patient. great sensitivity to light. watery yellow discharge. swollen eyelids..hot and intense inflammation. right is worse than left side.

belladonna: the infection appears out of nowhere. inflammation is intense. the mental state of aconite(first remedy mentioned above) is fear..belladonna's mental state is violence and irritability.

dilated pupils and glassy eyes. red, inflammations, but eyes are dry.

calcarea sulphurica: works well with newborns like argentum nitricum. the discharge is yellow pus. cornea may be smoky gray. itchy eyelids. the animal dislikes drafts and cold. they also dislike warm stuffy rooms. prefer open air.

euphrasia: made from herb called eyebright. if there is one remedy you want in your homeopathy kit, let this be the one for the eyes. discharges are acrid and nasal discharges are bland. the discharges may leave a stain. eyes water all the time. nighttime brings chills to the patient. eyelids spasm occasionally. profuse irritating tears and chronic inflammation.

mercurius: discharge is acrid, but thin. pus or whitish clot may be visible. lids spasm and could be red/inflamed. nose is also affected. discharge from nose could be foul smelling and greenish in colour.

animals tend to be irritable. they may even scratch or bite.

pulsatilla: thick bland yellow discharges. its for the kind of infection that just wont clear up. the inflammation is not intense, but its constant and lingering. it is usually given towards the end of an upper respiratory infection to clear the eye problems. animals are sweet..and submissive. they are needy and thirstless.

rhus tox:pus is yellow and profuse. intense inflammation. red and swollen eyes. the animal seems to be in great pain. lids are stuck together with a gluey substance and cornea may be ulcerated. movement causes pain.

the patient is chilly and restless(esp after midnight) and thirsty. joint pains may occur with movement, but becomes better with continued motion.

sulphur: usually given towards the end of an upper respiratory infection that is leaving, but without clearing a lingering eye problem. just like pulsatilla. tears and discharges are acrid. itchy, burning eyes. cat rubs the eyes a lot. dryish eyes on the inside, but the animal goes outside, they tear up. hot and thirsty...appetite is minimal.

HAVING SAID ALL THAT: euphrasia is the medicine i have most at hand. it is the most commonly needed remedy. for chronic conditions, i use 30c potency. twice a day for two or three days. but first wait after the initial dose to see if there is any improvement. only continue if there is improvement. dont give too much. let the remedy do its job. stop with first dose itself if there is full recovery. sometimes less is more.

of course, always consult a vet or a homeopath when in doubt.

She was found on the road in terrible shape, flea infested, a burn wound on her back(apparently some school kids tried burning the mother & the kids to just have some "fun"), terribly weak to even open her eyes and absolutely not in a position to stand. Her siblings were crushed under a car & she was the only survivor.

Namita took her in,and has nursed her to health.She's been with her for almost a month & a half and she has shown very good progress. Minnie-Me has a lovely temperament and is extremely loving and patient. She sleeps well at night without disturbing anyone & is completely vaccinated( rabies + 9-in-1) & de-wormed. She is extremely playful & naughty & loves cuddling up and sleeping at night. If no one is around, she cuddles up against namittas dog and sleeps with him or even the pillow suits her fine. She is tiny in size and demeanor but is extremely brave & loves to bark in her tiny voice, whenever she protests.

Namitta will be leaving the country soon, in another months time, for a period of 2 years or more and doesn't have anyone else who can take care of her then

Please help us find a good home for her.We do not want to be sending her back to a shelter, or, on the streets. She is an excellent dog and would make a delightful addition to anyone's family.

Kuki needs a home!

Hi

My name is Priti and I am the proud owner of a loving 9-10 mth old Indian dog called Kuki. Unfortunately I will be relocating abroad soon and am depressed at the thought of leaving my girl behind. The only thing that will give me some peace is finding a loving family who will give her the same amount of love, if not more!

Here's a little about my baby girl.....

Kuki was found as a tiny pup, starved, shivering and drenched in the rain , back in Aug 09. I took her in and she has been with me ever since. Kuki is a beige / cream coloured, female Indian dog, extremely docile and prefers staying indoors. Nevertheless, she has been potty trained and prefers to use a newspaper! She is very playful and loves having someone around her while she chews on her doggy bone or simply watches tv. At the same time, she can be quite the guard dog when she senses something aint right.

A funny thing about her is that she has an extra toe on her hind paw! Reminds me of Hrithik Roshan at times :-) She also has the most gorgeous floppy ears that make her look adorable when she tilts her head and poses for me!

She is quite possessive about her toys and picks them up after she has finished playing and keeps them on her bed! I'm sure a few human kids can learn from her ! At times, she suffers from separation anxiety, probably cos of her baby days. She is happy and serene when there is someone in the house and yet doesn't like to interfere. She grew up with my cats till she out-grew them in size and I had to separate them... in one of the pix, you can see her sleeping as a baby with one of my cats. And, she loves to play in water!

Kuki has had her 1st heat - I will be more than happy to get her neutered before I leave. Dint want her to go thru the operation in this cruel heat.

Dear Dog Lovers,

Here is a careless caretaker who killed an adopted dog by name ‘Spike’. Spike as you people know was found on this site few months before (but I didn’t know then). I came to know many of them were ruthless with him, but none like me!!!

I got Spike from Aparna (KARMA), on 14 Jan 2010 festival day. Later he was named as ‘Naya’ meaning son or eyes (according to me). Naya became a good company and a member in our family. Naya was a very naughty and mischievous guy who needed an all time attention. We used to play hide and seek, he would find me hiding in the dark and jump n play that he found me. He was a one man dog.

Naya is no more. He met with an accident and passed away. I could still remember his death time on road someone gave water; he drank from me and left me forever…………. Today he is a memory. A joyful and a painful memory.

I miss him a lot; even now tears are in my eyes.

Kindly think before adopting or buying a pet. Care for Animals. Be kind for them and respect the cause.

recently, someone had sent me a email about renal failure in cats, and i saved it for further reading. now, 1 of my cousins in usa told me that her cat is also suffering from renal failure, and that she may loose her baby in 6 months to 2 years. she is in usa, so the cat will surely get good treatment, but in india, the treatment is not as advanced.
i did a little bit of research on the net, and this is what i have found out.

Signs of Renal failure in cats. Increased thirst is often the first symptom
Kidney disease, in the form of chronic renal failure (CRF), is a common problem in older cats. I have seen kidney failure in cats as young as 4 years, but far more frequently in much older cats. The most noticeable symptom is an increase in water consumption and urination ("drink-a-lot, pee-a-lot syndrome"). A blood test should be done if you notice these symptoms, as there are several conditions that can cause this. The increase in drinking and urinating in CRF is due to loss of the kidney's ability to concentrate the urine. The kidneys have a very large reserve capacity, and symptoms of kidney failure are not seen until approximately 75% of kidney tissue is non-functional. In my experience, kidney failure is the most common cause of death in older cats.

Causes of Chronic Renal Failure

Recent research suggests a link between vaccination for feline distemper and immune-mediated inflammation of the kidneys, which is thought to be the cause of CRF. Annual boosters for distemper are completely unnecessary. Be sure to discuss all recommended vaccines with your veterinarian. A cat with kidney disease or kidney failure should not be vaccinated at all.

Long-term feeding of an all-dry-food diet is also suspected as a factor in Chronic Renal Failure. (since bittu was also in total dry food, i have spent 2 months to start him on jelly food.)

Cats' kidneys are highly efficient and adapted to life in the desert, where they would get most or all of their water from eating their prey. Cats eating dry cat food take in only half the water that cats on a canned or homemade diet get; this chronic dehydration can cause stress on the kidneys over time. Dry diets also predispose cats to lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD, LUTD, FUS, crystals, stones, cystitis) because they force such a high degree of urine concentration. Chronic or recurrent bladder disease may also be a factor in the development of CRF.

i am not giving the cure and other details here, but people, if possible, please please keep your cats on a fresh food diet as much as possible. please dont keep your cats on dryfood diet and if possible, give them fish and rice or chicken as against dryfood, even jelly food or canned food is comparatively better than dryfood.

please take care right now, so your pet dosent suffer later on!

hi friends,
once more, there are a few issues that i wdould like to share with all of u.

1. RESCUING- in places where animals have not been sterilised, there are pups and kittens found on road or building societies. a lot of times i get calls from people that they saw a pup/ kitten wandering on road and want to get it adopted or it can be fostered by someone.
i agree that the animal needs to be taken care off, but its not possible to just pick up a pup/ kitten from road and get it a home. before calling people, try to locate the mother and see if she is around or check with people if there are other littermates. most of the times, the mother is around and the pup/ kitten wud have just wandered off. it is not possible to pick each pup/ kitten found on road and given at a shelter or fostering.

also, there are cases of injured animals found on road. if the injury is not too deep and not dangerous, try to get the animal treated at the place rather than getting it picked up and leaving it at a shetler. the animal will get better faster when it is, as it is in its 'home', rather than leaving at shelter, where it is alone and has chances of getting other infections.

small injuries, maggot wounds, eye infections, kennel cough etc, can all be treated at the location and unless the animal has broken bones or bleeding a lot, please dont keep calling shelters to pick the animal up. there are paanwalas, shopkeepers, vegetable vendors, building watchmen who are generally fond of animals and will not mind helping u get the animal treated.

2. FOSTERING- recently i have come across people who randomly pick up pups/ kitten from road, give them for fostering and say they will get them adopted. as much as everyone here wants to help and get these animals adopted, a lot of times, it dosent happen. then what happens to the fostered pup/ kitten? if u have agreed for fostering, then be ready for the consequences also. there are times when a particular pup/ kitten may not get adopted, then what? are u going to keep it for a life time? if not, then please dont commit to fostering. when a pup/ kitten is put up for fostering, it gets used to living in a apt/flat as compared to staying on road and then leaving it back on road, will be very cruel. pups/ kittens living on roads, are in danger of being crushed under vehicles or not getting enough food or getting infected, but its a part of life, which they get used to and learn to survive. for a fostered pup/ kitten, that life means sure shot death. they are not used to finding their own food and are also not used to running away when they see a vehicle or other animals, and that is dangerous for them.

also, if the foster home, cant keep them and if the animal is not adopted yet, then what happens? finding another foster home for a few days/ weeks and then another n then another. the pup/ kitten is just tossed around like a toy, and what we dont realise is that it creates problems for them to adjust to new surroundings every now n then, changes in people who handle them, changes in food habits, etc. also, if they grow old in foster homes only, then chances of adoption are less and once they reach a age of 6/9 months, then keeping them on road is also impossible. so please think of all the pros and cons before comitting.

3.ADOPTION- like recent case (kirans case, which i emailed everyone a couple of days back), there are people who just want to get the animals adopted, come what may. they feel that animal is better off in a house as compared to road, and i feel that animal is better off on a road as compared to a house where its being kept locked and not given proper food and care. the pup/ kitten may not survive on road and die, but if it lives and is kept like a bonded labour, what kind of a life are u giving it? is it worth the torture? would u like to be kept like that? think of it first. if u cant keep a check on the life and think its the animals destiny, then u are wrong. the animals destiny was to live a life on streets and u have changed it, so u better be responsible for your doings.

there are also others who tell people that these are not strays. they prefer to call our local pariah pups/ kittens as mixed breeds and clean them up and wash them and make them look really cute before adoption. there mayb cases where people are genuine and dont care about the breed and pick up an animal, but what happens when these pups/kittens grow up and look like indian dogs/ cats? genuine people, who really love their pets will not have a problem and will still keep them, but what about the few who were looking for a cute pup/kitten and that pup/kitten dosent look so cute when it grows up? they may feel cheated and get the anger out on the animal, for no fault of theirs and the animal mayb left on road- abandoned.
if the person is genuine, it will not matter to him/ her if the animal is a mixed/ pure breed or covered with fleas/ ticks. they can always be taken to vets and cleaned up. like i have mentioned earlier also, people have come to me and picked up pups/ kittens covered in fleas and ticks, a couple of times, even pups with maggot wounds have been adopted. when the owner takes the animal to vet and gets the necessary vaccinations/ treatment done, it is a sense of responsibility that comes over, and most of the times in these cases, u dont have to worry that the animal will be thrown out at a later stage.

just a few points that have been haunting me since past month or so, when i hear people speak or see emails/ smses about adoption. please see if these points are valid enough for u also and see if u can take things on your hands rather than relying on someone else for help.

bittu is my pet cat, who came into our lives around 8 years back, and changed us totally!

AN INCIDENT WHICH HAPPENED RECENTLY (MARCH 2010) WHICH I WANT TO SHARE WITH EVERYONE.
after bittu came home, we started noticing other animals in our building, so slowly, rani started getting food from us. rani, is now 13 yrs old doggy. when i didnt have too much knowledge of sterilisation etc, i let rani have pups. out of the many she delivered outside and within my building, a couple are still with us. tutti, the elder one, who is now 6 yrs old and julie, who is 4.5 yrs old now.
there are other cats also, tiny, kali, simba, stumpy/ champi, and new additions- 2 ginger males n 1 black cat.
bittu was attacked by a male cat when he was just 1 yr old, and he was in a real bad condition at that time. so, naturally, we kept him safe from any other cat or dog. specially julie, since she had a habit of killing pigeons and kittens. there were times when i have rescued pigeons from her mouth and given them to ngos for recovery (if julie was a stray dog, hunting for food, i wud have let her kill the birds, but since she gets enough food, there was no reason for her to kill a bird). when bittu went out for his walks, mom or me would be with him, and at night, when the dogs would come running on seeing me with bittu, i would painc and carry bittu home. gradually, i started to let bittu be (i am always around him as he is blind and cant protect himself), and let the dogs come near him, but not too close. at times, tutti would come and lick bittu, but she was the gentle one, so i never worried about her hurting bittu.
this is story of bittu and julie.

bittu loves to roam around the backside of my house. so everytime the door is opened to fill water for the dogs, he manages to run out :) this time, i went and strolled with him for sometime n then put him on the water tank. julie, as usual saw me going out of the house, so followed. she jumped up and came to sit net to me and bittu. julie loves to sit next to me and get her head rubbed, gives shake hands and wants to lick me, which i dont allow.

julie came and sat next to bittu. even at night, she runs after him, trying to make him play with her, but he gets scared and just runs away! even right now, u can see bittus reaction to julie sitting next to him.

she moved in closer to try and play

this is how she showed her love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i cudnt imagine how she licked his forehead and tried to make friends with him!

julie has since then, tried to smell bittu everytime shes around him, and she always tries to play with him. though he is scared of her, bittu tolerates her and this was an amazing moment for me!
bittu gets really wild when he hears other cats having a catfight or even smells other cats, but when the dogs are around, he dosent react wildly! he lets julie n tutti lick him and does try to escape at times but now i know that my cat is safe from other cats, when these dogs are around! now, i go away, leaving bittu with the dogs, and i dont have to worry about other cats coming and attacking bittu, as i know that the dogs are gonig to protect him, come what may!

Scared Cat

Many times, a cat can become scared, either indoors or outdoors because of a traumatic event. In one case, the cat was chased home by something and even suffered a small nip to the hind leg. This cat was afraid to go outdoors anymore, and the owner did not know why. By figuring out that the cat had been chased by something scary, we were able to help it. This may not be your case, but try to determine if your cat has been injured in any way. Even a patch of fur that's missing can help you to determine this.
Be gentle with your cat and don't force it into the desired behaviors. Allow your cat to come to trust again at it's own pace. If you have a dog or other cat that your scared cat is comfortable with, allow them to interact.

Real Fear of Everything

If you have ever seen a cat like this, you know what I mean. The poor thing has been scared out of it's wits and may empty it's bladder at the least provocation. It may hide all the time and only come out to eat and use the litterbox. Sometimes, the cat is comfortable with one person but no-one else. This cat may have been abused or gotten an injury that was very traumatic.

Take this cat is stages. First, use treats to draw the cat out. When the cat is comfortable with one person, switch to another person. Always speak in soothing tones in the cat's chosen hiding room. If you are male and have a deep or booming voice, you need to be especially careful. Usually women do better with cats because their voices are higher and softer. Speak in a low volume and coax the cat with treats. Some cats prefer men, so the opposite may be true. Children need to be reminded to move slowly and be very gentle with the cat.

Raucous laughter can scare the cat. Eventually, your cat will come to love the sound of laughter and even perform antics which cause you to laugh. Your cat may slowly come out of the room and begin to explore the rest of the house. Allow the cat to do so at it's own pace and remember to move slowly and talk softly while the cat is doing this.

There is no time frame for this. Each cat's trauma is different. These cats have a very long memory for hurt, but also for good things. The more good things you can heap on those hurts, the better.

You can try clickers to train the cat in a positive way, but if the cat seems disturbed by the clicker, stop. Often, traumatized cats don't do well with clicker training.

Aggressive Cats

An aggressive cat may strike at animals or people seemingly without warning. The whiskers, ears, tail and eyes are your clues to an impending attack. If the cat is new to you, you may not know all the clues at first and suffer several attacks. There may be several causes, and we will explore each.

* Medical:
Your cat may be ill or be injured and in pain. Always rule this out by a visit to the vet. If your cat has previously always been cuddly and sweet, this is even more important. Your cat may have developed diabetes or a tumor and need treatment. Once the medical reasons for the behavior have healed, the sweet temperament you remember will return.

* Fear:
As in the above examples, this must be addressed for each cat. If you have ruled out medical causes, and your usually sweet puss becomes a terror, your best bet will be more aggresive play with your cat. Always push in should your cat bite you, so that the cat learns this is not acceptable. Your cat has the same fight-or-flight mechanisms that we do, so your cat has decided to fight instead of hide. That will mean that your cat is fighting for its life in some way. You MUST identify what is causing this behavior. It may be an odor on your person that is causing it - so go take a shower and see if that helps. If not, see a doctor. If you constantly challenge your cat, stop. If your cat has gotten into a plant, remove the plant from the cat's reach. Some plants cause hallucinations in cats or can poison cats. With time, this behavior should stop.

* Dominance:
Your cat may be trying to get to the top of the cat-pecking-order. Even if there is only one cat, the cat wants to be on top. This is most common with other animals and a new cat.

The cat wants to be top-cat in the household. It will try to dominate the dogs, too. Eventually, this behavior will sort itself out as the new cat finds its place in the pecking order. If your cat was feral and is now tame, the behaviors will be more common. However, even the most loving cat can behave this way.

* Extreme Behaviors:
In extreme cases, isolate your cat from the general household population and get a large cage with levels for different activities. A play-pen for cats. Put in a covered cat bed, litter box and place the food and water bowls on one of the shelves. Put something hard on the top to prevent aggression and fear, as other cats in your family will want to jump on the top. Place this cage in a place where you can control access by the other animals and allow them into the area one at a time. Try to identify your cats triggers by watching her while the other animals are in the room.

As your cat becomes comfortable with the worst of the triggers, you can let it out with the other animals for short periods while attended. Eventually, you will be able to do away with the cage as confinement and let the cat use it as a safe-haven.

Taming a Feral Cat:

If you have taken on an abused or feral cat, my hat is off to you. These cats are very difficult in the beginning, but become the most loving of all cats. They may never be lap-cats or extremely cuddly, but their appreciative love will reward you many times over.

You need to get down to the cat's level, so sit on the ground or a low stool. These cats will be most afraid when you are standing because you are so much larger than they are.

Give it time and speak softly. Name your cat and use that name in a loving tone. Your cat will come to associate its name with loving gestures and treats. This is excellent! You want your cat to think of you as something good, not something scary.

Start with treats. Use them to tempt the cat close and as your cat becomes less afraid, offer your hand. Move slowly. When you feel the time is right, pet the cat behind the ears or stroke it's back. Eventually, the cat will come for scratches behind the ears, base of the tail or under the chin. Offer these freely. Once your cat comes out to greet you when you've been out, you know that your cat is yours and will always love you.

Trips to the vet will always be traumatic, and expect your cat to hide for a while on returning home. Give your cat treats and call her name gently and lovingly. Your cat will realize that going to the vet was unfortunate, but that she can generally still trust you. Good luck!

I am from Delhi/Noida and have 5 stray pups right next to my office.
There are 4 males and 1 female. We have been taking care of them since
they were a few hours old and we cannot leave them to their fate now.
They have grown into healthy and friendly pups. Their deworming is
done and we will get them vaccinated in a few days' time.
They live inside a building under construction and have started going
out on the road to play. I am terrified they will be hit by a speeding
car, because although we and the workers keep an eye on them, it's not
possible to monitor their every move. We lost a pup today because it
followed the mother out on the road and came under a car.
We are desperately looking for good homes for the pups. Even if
there's someone who's willing to take them in on a temporary basis,
till they get adopted, it would be great. We cannot bear another pup
getting killed.
We would be grateful if you could help us.

Binti is very clever; sits on command & knows when to steal kisses frm us. She loves to give & receive kisses & have her belly rubbed - She's a big baby!! Dear Friends,

Just wanted to share 2 strange adoption incidents that happened with me recently. Sharing this so that if you have any puppy/dog looking for a good homes, you can be cautious if these people contact you.

One Dr. Ram contacted me recently . He said he is a dog lover & wants a small sized dog , preferably female. He claimed he is working in Columbia Asia Hospital (B'lore) as a neurologist & stays near Bannerghatta. I invited him home. He came over & spent some good 4 hrs with us & the babies at home. On further probing, he sadi that he will be shifting to Singapore in Sept. 2010 & will be there for at least 10 yrs. I even explained him the process for pet trasport to Singapore, quarantine period & sent him the details of all the documents that are needed for the same & the people to contact both in India & Singapore. He was very gentle & well-mannered & was good with the puppies so we decided to check out his place over the weekend & then take a decision. The very next day i got a call from another dog-lover friend in my network who was fostering 3 puppies & he told me that Dr.Ram (Columbai asia, neurologist staying in Bannerghatta) had picked up a female puppy from him about a week back. We checked the no & email id & realised that the same person had picked up a puppy. When I asked Dr. Ram he refused flatly satying that he has not adopted any puppy from any one & in fact he took the name of Mrs. parul saying that he is taking a second puppy from her on the same day that we were planning to visit him. And 5 minutes after that my friend called him up & Dr. Ram said that the puppy he had adopted from him is doing very well & is being taken care of. Obviously after this blatant lie, adoption was ruled out immediately.

Another is a person named Harsha. He has been contacting me for almost 3 mths for adopting a puppy. He has also contacted a number of my other dog-lover friends who are fostering puppies. Last Tuesday, he even called me up from a unknown no. & when i recgnized who he was, he just hung up on me. I have also seen online ads from him saying that he is a dog-lover & looking for dogs. Therre is something not very right about this & I request you all to be careful & run a detailed check in case he contacts you for adoption.

There's a doberman pup that's lost it's way .. he's male and about 8 months old and fully trained and house broken... would have loved to keep him but already got a dogs at home that he doesn't get along with ... very affectionate .. actually very very very affectionate and loves attention.. he was wandering about on the road very hungy when i found him .. no injuries and tried to look for owner... put up posters as well ... giving him up at cupa today (16th-Dec-09). Had called cupa yesterday but they seemed reluctant to take the puppy in ... so v r just goin there and hopefully theyll take him in .. Please do something about him... Photo attached...... Is there a place you could find to keep him until we can find his owner and then give him up as last resort??? Will try goin to the police station as well today and also, isn't a kci registerd dog supposed to have a tracker or somthing inserted under their skin ?? will they be able to check for that tht at cupa? please reply asap......

All the puppies are adorable, healthy and are up for immediate adoption in Bangalore. The vaccination and sterilization will be taken care of by the foster parent when needed.
